Karlsson 150-30 bent paring gouge
Description
Hans Karlsson 150-30 bent paring gouge -
Bent gouges are good tools for use on deeply concave surfaces. In a deep concavity, the bend in the shaft of a bent gouge allows the bevel to remain in contact with the wood longer than is possible with a straight gouge.
A few words about the differences between straight versus bent gouges:
A straight gouge has the most effective delivery of force into the cutting of wood, since the handle, shaft and cutting edge are all in alignment. In general, straight gouges are best for work such as carving the outside of bowls, shaping shallow concave surfaces such as platters, surface relief carving or when sculpting a Windsor chair seat.
A bent gouge, although somewhat less effective at transferring force, is the best choice when working into concave surfaces.
Hans Karlsson bent paring gouges are made in Sweden of high quality SS2258 steel, hardened to 63-65 HRC. These gouges are between 9 and 10 inches long.
The solid wooden handles of the Karlsson paring gouges are made of Swedish ash or elm. Their overall shorter length allow for more controlled carving than the longer, heavier handled HK double hooped gouges.
Paring gouges are an ideal length and weight for use with just the force of the hand.
The unique handle shape fits the hand comfortably and allows for efficient carving.
Though they can be hit gently with a soft-faced mallet, the wooden handle of a paring gouge will break or become deformed if it is hit too hard with a mallet.
[We recommend the heavy duty double hooped gouges for more powerful stock removal during the initial phases of the carving process, they have reinforced handles specifically designed to be hit with a mallet.]
We carry HK bent paring gouges in six different sweeps: 25-22, 35-30, 55-30, 90-40, 150-30 & 150-45
